I’ll admit, I wasn’t too excited to return to Tulum. My first trip a few years back had left me with mixed feelings about this so-called “sustainable” paradise. I had pictured a dreamy yoga-meets-hippie retreat, full of healthy food and eco-conscious living. Instead, what I found was a lot of greenwashing, a booming party scene that felt more like Vegas on the beach, and disappointing accommodations that barely lived up to their “eco-friendly” and “vegan-friendly” claims. After that trip—and a sobering watch of The Dark Side of Tulum documentary—I swore off Tulum for good.

Why I Chose Our Habitas Tulum

And yet, here I was again. The natural beauty of the area—the turquoise Caribbean, lush jungle, and freshwater cenotes—is hard to resist, and my boyfriend had never been. This time, though, I was determined not to repeat the mistakes of my last visit. I wanted a stay that actually delivered on sustainability and hospitality. That’s how I landed on Our Habitas Tulum, an adults-only eco-resort that blends luxury glamping with genuine environmental and guest-conscious practices.

The Habitas brand operates hotels across Mexico and the Middle East, and they seem genuinely invest in both guest experience and environmental responsibility. Tulum’s property is set on the beachfront but tucked at the quieter start of the hotel strip, so you’re close enough to the buzz without being trapped in it. You can walk to the Tulum Ruins, cenotes are just a short drive away, and there’s street parking if you bring a car.

Glamping-Style Rooms with a Twist

We stayed in one of the pool rooms, complete with a private dipping pool tucked out back. The rooms are “glamping style”—canvas tents that feel a bit like luxury military lodgings. Inside, the décor is warm and minimalist, with everything you need for a comfortable stay. My one hesitation: the outdoor shower. In theory, it’s a great design, but in practice, I could have done without the bugs and wildlife joining me.

On a practical note, the Wi-Fi was surprisingly strong—good enough to stream Love Is Blind UK (my current obsession!) without a glitch. For a property tucked into the jungle, that felt like a win.

Dining: Plant-Based Options and Exceptional Service

Food at Our Habitas Tulum was consistently solid. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner had a handful of plant-based options—limited variety, but what was there was flavorful and satisfying. More importantly, the service stood out. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel truly welcomed, ensuring each meal was a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Wellness & Daily Programming

The wellness offerings at Our Habitas Tulum are designed to foster human connection, spiritual awakening, and regeneration. The resort’s spa provides a curated selection of treatments and rituals that bridge ancient systems of knowledge with revolutionary technologies. These offerings aim to change the body’s chemistry and physiology, increase vitality, and achieve a peak state of mind. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or a deeper spiritual connection, the wellness center offers experiences tailored to individual needs, promoting overall well-being and balance.

Daily programming is another highlight. Each day, Habitas offers complimentary activities centered around its six pillars: Art & Culture, Wellness, Adventure, Learning, Food & Beverage, and Music. I only made it to the sound bath, but it was incredible. Next time, I’d love to dive deeper into the other offerings.

Location: Quiet but Connected

The resort itself is small and intimate, with sandy paths weaving through the jungle and out to the ocean. It feels connected to its surroundings in a way that a lot of Tulum’s bigger, glossier hotels miss. And because it’s at the start of the strip, you’re removed from the chaos of Tulum’s nightlife while still being close to the sights and activities.

Would I Stay Again?

So, would I stay again? Absolutely. Our Habitas Tulum gave me a glimpse of the Tulum I had once hoped for—one that balances natural beauty, thoughtful hospitality, and a genuine attempt at sustainability. For anyone skeptical about what Tulum has become, this might just be the reset you need.
