fourteen dollars fifty to
make it to California
can you do it in time?

take a break

give him the hat
with the big brim
so he won’t have to squint

well, at least it’s not raining
the trucks aren’t swerving to splash you
hope the next ride’s no pervert
last one tried to take you
for more rides than one
your head is sore from his talking
your kidneys are sore from his shocks

left of at midnight
at a pitch black freeway junction
got bug bites all over now
something got into the bags

hustled off early
avoiding the fuzz ’cause
carrying makes it easier
when the road hits back
