Let’s be real: protein bars are great in a pinch, but a plant-based traveler can’t live on pea protein and dates alone. If you’ve ever wondered how to eat plant-based on the road—without sacrificing flavor, convenience, or your values—you’re in the right place. Whether you’re hitting the highway, catching a red-eye, or exploring new cities on foot, there are plenty of ways to stay nourished without compromising your taste buds.

1. Map Out Plant-Based Stops Ahead of Time

A little planning goes a long way. Before your trip, use apps like HappyCow, Google Maps, or Yelp to pin vegan-friendly restaurants, grocery stores, and markets along your route. Even small towns often have veggie-forward cafes, smoothie bars, or global spots with plant-based options. Bonus: you’ll discover some local gems you might have otherwise missed.

2. Think Beyond Snacks

Instead of overloading on protein bars and trail mix, pack a small cooler or insulated lunch bag with fresh fruit, hummus and crackers, cut veggies, or pre-made wraps. Frozen burritos or overnight oats in a jar also hold up well for a few hours on the road. Reusable containers keep everything organized and waste-free.

3. Learn the Vegan Hacks for Chain Restaurants

From Dunkin’s avocado toast to Chipotle’s fully-loaded sofritas bowl, chains are increasingly vegan-friendly. Burger King offers an Impossible Whopper (just order it without mayo), and Taco Bell makes plant-based ordering easy when you swap beans for meat and skip the cheese and sour cream. Don’t be afraid to customize—most spots are happy to accommodate, especially if you know what to ask for. Keep a mental (or physical) list of your go-to options so you’re never stuck guessing.

4. Shop Smart When You Arrive

First stop? A local grocery store or market. Stock up on essentials like plant milk, bread, fruit, and a few treats to round out your hotel or Airbnb stash. If you have a kitchen, great. If not, no problem—simple meals like bagels and vegan cream cheese, veggie sandwiches, or rice cakes with almond butter and banana are totally doable with minimal tools.

  1. This Is great info! I just returned to Los Ángeles from Bali and flew vía Taipei on China Airlines. They and other airlines can provide vegan-friendly meals on your flight if you notice them ahead of time.
